What Blowing Caliche Dust Actually Does to Your Windows

A dry wind picks up off the caprock, and within a few hours every south-facing window on the block has a fine tan film across it, the screens have gone from grey mesh to solid brown, and the sill inside the frame has a drift of dust sitting in the corner. Anyone who has lived on the South Plains for more than one spring knows the feeling. It happens fast and it happens often.

Caliche isn't just brown dirt

Caliche is a hardened, calcium-carbonate-rich crust that sits under a lot of the topsoil across the South Plains and out into eastern New Mexico. Wind, tillage, and construction grind it down into a fine, pale dust that carries further and settles harder than typical loam. It's part of why dust storms out here look the way they do on the horizon, and it's part of why the dust that lands on your windows behaves differently than the dust that lands on a house in a wetter, greener part of the country.

How it settles on glass and screens

Dry air holds a static charge, and glass picks up dust readily in that kind of climate, especially after a windy stretch with no rain to knock it back down. Screens catch even more of it, because a screen is functionally a filter. Every gust that would otherwise hit the glass directly gets caught in the mesh first, which protects the pane somewhat but leaves the screen itself loaded with fine grit within days of a real wind event. Frame tracks fill in the same way, trapping dust in the lower channel where it mixes with any moisture and turns into a gritty paste that's harder to shift than dry dust alone.

Spring brings the worst of it on the South Plains, when a dry, windy stretch after a slow winter kicks up loose topsoil before anything greens up enough to hold it down. That's usually when static buildup on glass is heaviest and when a freshly cleaned screen can reload within a week of a single hard blow. Late summer tends to calm down some, once there's more ground cover, though a dry August with no rain can bring the same pattern right back.

Why frequency matters more here than most places

In a humid climate, regular rain does a lot of the rinsing for you between cleanings. On the South Plains, long dry stretches let dust accumulate undisturbed, and that changes how the glass should be handled. Wiping a dusty window dry, the way you might a countertop, drags grit across the surface and can leave fine scratching over time, especially on darker-tinted commercial glass where hairline marks show up under direct light. The right approach is wet from the start, lifting the grit off the surface with water and a proper squeegee pass rather than grinding it in.

That's true at ground level and it's just as true two and three storeys up, where a water-fed pole reaches glass that would otherwise only get attention once a year, if that. On taller commercial buildings and multi-storey homes, the upper panes often carry the heaviest dust load simply because nobody's up there checking on them between visits.

What actually deals with it

A proper pass covers more than the glass. Screens get pulled and rinsed, not just brushed, since caliche dust packs into the weave in a way a dry brush won't fully clear. Frame tracks and sills get wiped out so the dust doesn't just resettle onto a freshly cleaned pane the next time a window gets opened.
